Mayor's Message

As both the Mayor and a long-time resident of Pickering, I have had the opportunity to meet so many different, yet wonderful people. Our city is truly blessed to be among the most ethnically diverse in Ontario and we celebrate the richness woven into the fabric of our community.

While our origins may differ, and our journeys here may have followed different paths, I am frequently inspired by a shared pride in our City and a desire to make it the best place to live, work, and play.

I am pleased to announce that the theme of the 2009 Mayor’s Gala is The Emerald Isle. A nod to my family’s heritage and a chance to celebrate the majesty and wonder of Ireland. For one enchanted evening, this year’s Mayor’s Gala will transport its guests to this land of myth, magic, and merriment.

Since its inception four years ago, the Mayor’s Gala has become Pickering and area’s signature black-tie fundraising affair. In this span, more than $430,000 has been raised for the Ajax-Pickering hospital, our Veterans, youth, the arts, and Special Olympics. This year, I am pleased to announce that the proceeds will be used to purchase portable ultra-sound machines Rouge Valley Ajax-Pickering hospital, as well as support the Women’s Multicultural Resource Centre of Durham and St. Paul’s on the Hill Community Food Bank.

I would like to thank Scotiabank, the Presenting Sponsor of the Mayor’s Gala, and lead sponsors Metrus, Ontario Power Generation, and Tribute-Runnymede, along with our other corporate partners who have generously supported this initiative from the onset. Together, we are strengthening our community and making a real and meaningful difference in many lives.

Thank you. I look forward to seeing you on November 21st!

Dave Ryan
Mayor, City of Pickering
